How to produce and select good paper cups?

2025-09-12

Production process:

Before using the paper cup machine, we need to prepare the paper for making the containers. It must be food-grade paper, and most food-grade paper is imported from Europe and America, which are considered relatively safe and good materials. Then, it must go through the lamination process, where an oil-resistant and water-resistant material is wrapped on the paper surface to proceed to the subsequent shaping steps. Lamination is attaching a very thin layer of plastic material to the paper to make the paper cup resistant to oil and water, and able to hold beverages, soups, and food for a long time. The choice of this layer of laminating material also affects the characteristics of the paper cup. This is the step that makes the paper cup sturdy and attractive. After the laminating process, the required patterns and colors will be printed on the paper roll. After the ink is applied, a water-protective layer will be printed as a protection.

The printed paper is sent to the paper cup machine for processing, and the knife mold is used to cut out fan-shaped pieces of paper. The mold provides heat at the seams of the paper to cause the PE to be thermally damaged and adhere to each other, and the bottom of the paper cup is immediately fixed with adhesives. Then, the mold pushes the cup opening to make the lower roll of paper descend and be fixed by heat, thus forming the rim of the paper cup. These shaping steps can be completed in one second. The finished paper cups are sent to the inspection machine to check if the shape is complete and undamaged, and the internal surface is clean and free of stains. After the inspection is completed, the paper cups enter the packaging process and await shipment. Some new types of paper cup machines also have diverse functions and can independently complete many steps.

Selection method:

When selecting paper cups, we should not only look at whether the color of the paper cup is white or not. Color does not mean the more white, the more hygienic. Some paper cup manufacturers add a large amount of fluorescent whitening agents to make the cups look whiter. These harmful substances, once entering the human body, will become potential carcinogenic factors. We can look at the paper cup under a fluorescent lamp. If the paper cup appears blue under the fluorescent lamp, it indicates that the fluorescent agent exceeds the standard, and consumers should use it with caution. We can also pinch the paper cup to see if the cup body is soft and not firm, and be careful of leakage that affects usage. We should choose paper cups with thick and hard cup walls. At the same time, we can smell the paper cup. If there is a pungent smell, be cautious and avoid using such paper cups. Some paper cups have colorful cup walls, and we should be careful of ink poisoning because the ink contains benzene and toluene, which are harmful to health. It is best to purchase paper cups with no ink printing or less ink printing on the outside. At the same time, we should not use damp paper cups because they will easily form mold when damp, and accidentally ingesting mold can cause great harm to our health.

Selection Criteria Critical Checks
Color Avoid ultra-white cups
Fluorescence Test UV blue indication
Structure Thick walls firm pinch test
Odor Reject pungent smell
Ink Safety Minimal external printing
Dryness Avoid damp cups mold risk
